Portuguese Athletes Shine at World Indoor Athletics Championships in Glasgow: João Coelho and Tiago Luís Pereira Compete in Finals

Sprinter João Coelho takes part this Saturday in the final of the 400 meters of the World Indoor Athletics Championships, in Glasgow, where Tiago Luís Pereira competes in the triple jump.

Without Olympic and world outdoor champion Pedro Pablo Pichardo, absent due to injury, Tiago Luís Pereira will be the only Portuguese representative in the triple, whose direct final is scheduled for 7:40 pm.

The 30-year-old Sporting athlete, ninth in Belgrade’2022, appears at the Emirates Arena with 17.02 meters, the best mark of the year, sixth among those on the entry list, led by Hugues Fabrice Zango, from Burkina Phaso (17.21).

Practically simultaneously with the last jumps of the triple jump competition, João Coelho will compete in the 400 meter final, at 9:10 pm.

The 24-year-old Sporting sprinter secured a place among the six fastest in the two laps of the short track on Friday, with a new national record (45.98 seconds) in the semi-finals, hours after having also improved the previous record, which was also his, for 46.35 seconds, in the qualifiers.

The national program in Glasgow’2024 is completed with the presence of sprinters Lorene Bazolo and Rosalina Santos in the 60 meter heats, starting at 11:20 am, and, if they qualify, in the semifinals, at 7:45 pm.
