Poroshenko sold out his TV channels because of the law “on oligarchs”

Former President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko sold the television channels Pryamoy and Channel 5 that belonged to him. According to the latter, the reason was the law “on oligarchs” adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on the initiative of President Volodymyr Zelensky.

According to the law, the NSDC will maintain a “list of oligarchs”, in order to get into which a citizen will need to meet a number of criteria. Thus, he must participate in the political life of the country, have a tangible influence on the media and be the beneficiary of a monopoly business entity. The criterion also called the excess of the confirmed value of human assets at the level of 1 million living wages – at the moment it is 2.27 billion hryvnia, or over $ 85 million.

The report of the now former TV channel Poroshenko says that the leader of the European Solidarity party and the team of journalists are aware of the “danger this law poses for … the activities of independent media” and the opposition. Therefore, it was decided to create a new media holding, owned by media professionals, journalists, public figures and parliamentarians who previously worked as journalists. This holding reportedly acquired 100% of the corporate rights in Poroshenko’s TV channels “at market prices.”

It is also indicated that the contract provides for the prohibition of Poroshenko “in any way to influence the editorial policy of the channels.”
