Population growth slowed in the first quarter, partly due to coronavirus outbreak NOW

The Dutch population has grown by around 15,500 people in the first quarter of 2020, more than 8,500 less than in the same period last year, the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) reported on Wednesday. According to researchers, the corona crisis contributed to this.

Partly due to the outbreak of the virus, nearly three thousand more died than children were born. Statistics Netherlands expects that even more people will die in April than babies will be born and will not make any statements about subsequent months. Normally, the number of deaths and births is balanced.

The fact that more people have moved to the Netherlands than people have moved abroad is the reason that there is still population growth. Here too, the coronavirus seems to be of influence: according to Statistics Netherlands, it is “unusual” that the migration balance is positive at this time of the year. Presumably many working Dutch and holidaymakers returned early.

Statistics Netherlands expects it to be quieter in the field of immigration, partly due to the corona virus. A decrease is said to have started, partly due to the many travel bans in Europe, but researchers want to wait until April before a final judgment is given.

In the first quarter, mainly Poland came to the Netherlands. According to the CBS, there were almost two thousand more than left.
