Political Duty to Reverse Alarming Crime Development in the Capital – Urgent Measures Needed for Safety in Oslo

The capital has serious problems with crime. It is a political duty to reverse the alarming development.

At the weekend, a 20-year-old man was shot at a kebab shop in Greenland. This is the latest in a series of recent shootings in public places in Oslo. Unfortunately, this is the expression of dangerous development.

Oslo is mostly a safe city, but in some areas the situation is worrying. This is particularly relevant in Greenland, where there have been several assassination attempts in public places and criminal networks operate openly.

Minister of Justice Emilie Enger Mehl (Sp) and Minister of Labor Tonje Brenna (Ap) invited to a press conference on Tuesday with police chief Ida Melbo Øystese in Oslo to show that they are now giving attention to the problems.

It is a shame for the government that the number of employees in the Oslo police district has decreased, while at the same time the development of crime has gone in the wrong direction. It is useless in this situation that many newly graduated police officers are unemployed.

Now the government is announcing more money in the revised national budget.

Hopefully the measures that the police are now taking will work. Among other things, they need to focus more on the areas with the worst crime statistics.

A large part of those who live in Greenland, Mortensrud and Furuset now feel unsafe, according to a study revealed by the police themselves on Tuesday. It is not surprising, given the grim picture that the police themselves paint of crime in these areas. The residents there need to regain a sense of security in the community.

In the same areas, trust in the police is also low, partly because the police are not very visible and because nothing is done about visible crime. It also seems that some refuse to report because they fear reprisals.

This development must be reversed.

It is obvious that failure to control crime will cause problems for the government before the next election. The opposition are doing their job when they put pressure on the government on this point.

The most basic job of politicians is to provide security to the people. The government is now in danger of losing that job.

Opening police offices in areas with the lowest crime rate seems to be a poor priority. But it’s not too late to turn around.

Although the problem of criminal networks, extreme violence in public places and open drug sales is greater in a handful of areas in Oslo, the development is disturbing in many parts of the country. Youth crime is on the rise the surrounding country.

In the Western police district, it has increased by as much as 40 percent, and it is particularly worrying that there is more violence among young people.

Unfortunately, the problem is much bigger than the fact that some areas in Oslo have gotten out of control. When crime is to be fought, it is obvious that the efforts of the police are the most important. But it is equally obvious that it is not enough when very young people break the law.
