On Monday, March 28, 2022, at around 7:30 p.m., the integrated control center in Freiburg was informed of a fire at the edge of the forest, not far from the Nessellachen district in Breitnau. The fire was noticed by a pilot of a light aircraft.
Ultimately, it turned out that about one hectare of forest was burning, west of the district boundary in the Buchenbach-Pfaffeneck area.
The Breitnau, Hinterzarten and Buchenbach fire brigades worked together to extinguish the fire, with a total of 113 men.
The firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading further and thus preventing a larger forest fire. The extinguishing work lasted until about 9:30 p.m. — since embers were still found, the fire brigade set up a “fire station”.
The police are investigating on suspicion of negligent arson. It is believed that an unauthorized campfire led to the forest fire.
