NEW YORK — A young man was attacked on a bus for wearing a turban in Queens and now police are searching for the perpetrator, authorities say.

The NYPD is investigating an alleged hate crime after a man attacked a 19-year-old man in Queens, trying to remove his turban from his head, police said.

The incident, police report, occurred Sunday morning. Police said the suspect was riding an MTA bus around 9 a.m. near 118th Street and Liberty Avenue when he approached a 19-year-old passenger wearing a turban. The man allegedly yelled at him: “We don’t wear that in this country and take off that mask!”

The suspect then physically attacked the young man, hitting him in the face, back and neck, causing cuts and pain, according to police. Police said the man also attempted to remove the turban from her head before getting off the bus and leaving the scene on foot.

According to police, the young man refused medical treatment at the scene.

The NYPD Hate Crimes Unit is investigating and the police department is calling it a hate crime assault.

Police are searching for the assault suspect described as a male, 25 to 35 years old, slim build, approximately 5’9″ tall, with brown eyes and black hair. He was last seen wearing a yellow bubble jacket, blue jeans and sneakers.
