Police officer rescues abused girl – and adopts her

Kingman. It’s been official since this summer: Kaila is now the daughter of Brian and Cierra Zach from Kingman, Arizona, and she has been adopted by the couple. But getting to know each other took place in a slightly different way. In March 2018, the police officer was called to an operation, it was about child abuse. The officers were in the house for the third time.

Zach found the then two-year-old Kaila, she only spoke two or three words, otherwise only made a sound and was obviously injured. The now 39-year-old took care of the girl and looked after her for five hours. “We painted, we ate snacks, she held my hand and was just that cute little thing,” he says.

Kaila made a lasting impression on Zach. As he did last week at “Good Morning America“Said the father of two went home that night and told his wife, Cierra, that he wanted Kaila to live with them. He had said that before, but this time he made it true.

But there was still a long way to go. Kaila was hospitalized first and was treated for various injuries resulting from the abuse. In Las Vegas, a fractured skull and a cerebral hemorrhage were treated, and the child’s elbow was dislocated, reports the magazine “People“.

When the authorities told the policeman that they were having trouble finding a foster family, the Zach family brought little Kaila to them. “She came with a sippy cup and a bag full of clothes that didn’t fit her,” said Brian Zach, “Good Morning America.”

After two days, Kaila said “Mama” to Zach’s wife

And while little Kaila was not having it well in her previous family, she blossomed with the Zachs: “Within two days she said Mama to Cierra, and I was ‘the guy’ for a week or two, then she called me Dad, ”says Zach. Kaila is now attending preschool, she loves animals and dancing and she likes to play fantasy games – she then goes “on a cruise” in a box.

The family had to live in uncertainty for 30 months – it was not clear whether Kaila would be housed elsewhere or even brought back to her biological parents. “Our goal was to love this girl and take care of her for as long as we were allowed.”

The family adopted Zach Kaila in August – 30 months after deployment

On August 18 of this year it became official: The Zach family adopted Kaila, who is now four, and she is growing up with her two siblings, 19-year-old Raina and 17-year-old Trevin. If Brian Zach has his way, more children will follow: His family is already trying to be able to take in a foster child again soon.

For Zach, rescuing Kaila also had an emotional aspect. The Kingman Police Department policeman was on one occasion in 2011, where a child was mistreated – but he died. “I couldn’t save this girl anymore, Kaila was my second chance,” he told People.
