Police Finding Fewer Cannabis Farms in Brabant: Is it a Real Decline?

The police are finding fewer and fewer cannabis farms. Last year, 338 nurseries were closed in Brabant. This is evident from the national overview of drug locations of the police. The question is whether fewer and fewer cannabis plants are really being grown. According to the police, it is mainly because she has too little capacity and because hemp has a low priority.

Nationally, a decline has been visible for years, but something is noticeable. In the region of Zeeland/West Brabant, more nurseries were discovered in the country alone. No one knows why, not even the police.

Cuttings
It is also striking that on average one in three cannabis plants was located in East Brabant. Nationally there were 61 nurseries with young plants, in the east of Brabant 20.

The nurseries with mature plants are mainly located in West Brabant. There and in a part of Zeeland there were 209. In the east of the province there were 129 cannabis nurseries.

Nationally, the number of cannabis nurseries fell from 4600 in 2017 to 2285 in 2021 and 1604 last year. Most are found in South Holland (368), closely followed by Brabant (338).

Constipated
According to the police, the decrease in the number of rolled-up nurseries has a few causes. There is too little capacity in the police. Hemp has a ‘lower priority’. In many units, the weed specialist has been cut back.

Another factor is that growers do their best to hide the nursery. Hemp farms, for example, are found underground. There is also less anonymous tipping.

Drug labs
The other drug figures were largely already known. Such as the number of 23 drug labs discovered, including two coke laundries in West Brabant. Just over a year earlier. Nationally, the number rose to 105. Amphetamine is the most commonly produced.

The police find more labs in North and South Holland and the northern provinces, but there is often a Brabant link.

Of all provinces, Brabant has the most storage places for synthetic drugs, such as raw materials. There were 29 storage locations last year. There were 86 nationally.

The dumping
Drug waste is dumped most often in Limburg: 42 times. This happened 30 times in Brabant. That is almost half of the national number of 155.

Since 2018, jerry cans and barrels have been dumped less often on remote forest paths. This is partly because labs discharge differently, for example directly into the soil. The experts at the police warn about the devastating consequences of drug waste in nature.

Waste sometimes literally goes up in smoke. For example, a trailer with 15,000 liters of drug waste burned out at Kruisland. Waste is also more often left behind in labs, such as in Baarle-Nassau where it was burned.

Police experts see that the dismantling of encrypted chat services such as Enrochat had effects on drug networks. But that lasted barely a year and then recovery followed. Moreover: how much is never discovered is always the question.

Not much to say about this year. The number of labs (7 so far) is in line with last year’s trend.
