The 53-year-old man, who has previously been a police officer in New York, had parked a car near the congress building in Washington DC
He is from Flint in the state of Michigan, police say in one press release.
The man was arrested just before five in the morning and investigators are now working to find out what he did outside the congress building.
When the police contacted him, he showed them a fake sign that said “Department of the INTERPOL”. He also claimed that he was an investigator at the agency.
When the police searched his car, which the man gave permission for, they found an air pistol, two bulletproof vests and ammunition. But no real weapons.
The man is charged with illegal possession of ammunition as well as unregistered ammunition.
