A third suspect has been arrested in the investigation into the recent fires in cell towers, police reported Wednesday evening. It concerns a thirty-year-old man from Swifterbant, who is suspected of setting fire to a radio tower in Dronten.
The police are investigating whether the man has been involved in other fires. On Friday morning, a suspect was also arrested for the arson in Dronten. This person is also from Swifterbant.
As of April 3, more than 20 cell towers have been set on fire. Authorities believe arson and fear poorer mobile accessibility. “The possible impact of the failure of the transmission masts can be significant. It could, for example, have consequences for the coverage of the telephone network and therefore for the accessibility of the emergency services”, writes the police.
In the detection program Investigation Requested has been paid attention to the fires several times. It is not yet known why the masts are set on fire.
The National Coordinator for Security and Counterterrorism (NCTV) suspects that there are extremist protests against the arrival of the 5G network. Opponents fear that the radiation from the cell towers will damage health. Research has shown that the radiation remains below the recommended limit of the European Union.
