The police arrested a man in early March who was transporting nearly 3 million euros in cash in his car, the police announced on Friday. The driver was checked in Landgraaf after information emerged from the cracked Sky messaging service.
The suspect, a 45-year-old man from Ukraine, turned out to have hidden a total of 2,947,750 euros in shopping bags. The stacks of money were tied together with rubber bands.
Police said the man had no clear explanation for the large amount of cash in his car and came up with “a vague story about the money.” It is probably criminal money, the police expect.
The investigation into the money is still ongoing. The man has been released for the time being.
The notes were hidden in shopping bags.
