Police arrest 36 suspects against itinerant gangs

The police have arrested 36 suspects in the Netherlands as part of an international action against itinerant gangs that commit thefts and burglaries. 27 cars were also seized. A total of thirteen countries took part in the promotion.

The suspects have different nationalities. For example, four Georgians from the AZC in Ter Apel were arrested. Two of them were arrested in Veendam with a bag prepared for theft with new electrical tools. The other two were stopped on the A28 near Wezep. They carried a thousand euros worth of spotlights and switching materials with them. According to the police, they could not explain the origin of this.

Build files

“The suspects often spend some time in one country until it gets too hot under their feet there,” said a police spokesman. “Then they leave for another country.” By sharing the information about these suspects internationally, the police can build up a file against them.

For example, tools were found in a Belgian car that can be used for burglaries. There were also stolen goods in the car. The suspect’s car turned out to be linked to burglaries in Germany. And during an inspection of a French car in Elsloo in Limburg, almost six kilos of hash was found in a professionally built hidden space. The two French passengers aged 18 and 27 have been arrested.

Two Dutchmen were also arrested with a stolen car with a Spanish license plate. The men were already suspected of multiple car thefts in Spain.

License plates

Number plates of cars used in burglaries and thefts in other countries are immediately put into the Dutch system for automatic number plate recognition. This allowed a suspect of a burglary in Belgium to be arrested near Amsterdam.

The results of the action in the twelve other countries are not yet known.
