Police are looking for images of a shooting incident in which Bas van Wijk (24) was killed

24-year-old Bas was shot last Saturday at the Amsterdam recreational lake the Oeverlanden. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries, but died of his injuries moments later.

One of the scenarios that the police take into account is that the shooter attempted theft attempt, which Bas was trying to prevent. His body has since been released and handed over to his family.

Research

With the help of the National Underwater Search Team, several detection dogs and forensic specialists, the police yesterday investigated the Anton Schleperspad. The used firearm and other traces were also searched on the suspected escape route of the perpetrator and the water.

At the time of the shooting incident it was busy at the swimming jetty on the Anton Schleperspad. The police are looking for visual material, such as selfies or videos.

Possible escape route

The team is particularly urgently looking for people who, after the shooting incident, were on the last stretch of the suspected escape route between Pavilion Aquarius and the bicycle-pedestrian bridge at Oude Haagse Weg.

Shortly after the shooting incident, a number of young people would have stood near that specific bridge, joined by a scooter driver. Investigators would like to get in touch with these people.

‘Innocent Victim’

The Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema says she sympathizes with the family and friends of Bas van Wijk. “Everything indicates that he is an innocent victim, who has paid the highest price for his bravery,” said Halsema this morning.

The mayor continues: “It is unbearable and deeply sad for his family and friends that Bas has been so violently snatched from their midst.” According to Halsema, the police investigation into the perpetrator has ‘the highest priority’.

Appropriate commemoration

People are calling on Twitter to commemorate Van Wijk on Dam Square. Halsema says that the municipality of Amsterdam is open to a suitable commemoration and is in discussion with the initiators.
