Poland called on Ukrzaliznytsia to stop blocking freight traffic

The Polish railway calls the Ukrainian one its key trading partner and expects the bans to be lifted.

The Polish railway PKP called on Ukrzaliznytsia to lift transport restrictions on transit to Poland by rail. This was stated by the board members of PKP SA, PKP Cargo and PKP Linie Hutnicza Szerokotorowa, informs Inwestycje.pl on Tuesday 18 January.

As the publication points out, on January 20, additional restrictions will come into force, consisting in a ban on the import of goods in Ukrzaliznytsia wagons to Poland, which, according to PKP SA, will further worsen the position of PKP Cargo and PKP LHS.

“In connection with the exhaustion of the possibility of holding negotiations by the PKP group under the auspices of PKP SA, I would like to repeat, this time publicly, our expectations for Ukrzaliznytsia. We expect the cancellation of the imposed and planned transport bans and the resumption of uninterrupted traffic between our countries,” he says. PKP SA board member Andrzej Olszewski.

In turn, acting President of PKP Cargo Vladislav Schepkovsky said that the majority of transport, incl. from China to Poland passes through Belarus, especially through the Brest-Terespol border crossing. He called UZ’s actions “harmful and unjustified” and expressed hope for their cancellation.

“In connection with the introduction of transport restrictions by Ukrzaliznytsia, including a ban on the transportation of loaded and empty wagons in transit through Ukraine to Poland, as well as in connection with the announcement of a complete restriction on the export of wagons owned by Ukrzaliznytsia from January 20, our company, like Ukrzaliznytsia, will incur specific financial and image losses,” Schepkovsky claims.

“Ukrainian Railways is our key trading partner. Over 20 years of operation, PKP LHS has invested more than PLN 1 billion in the modernization of rolling stock and the expansion of infrastructure. It is thanks to the development of transport in Slavkov that both the scale of transportation and UZ revenues are growing. We hope that our Ukrainian partners unblock transit, because they are its main beneficiary,” summed up PKP LHS President Zbigniew Tracichleb.

Recall that Ukraine can sue Poland over freight traffic. Over the past five or six years, trade between Poland and Ukraine has doubled, while the number of Polish auto permits has decreased by 40,000 per year.

It was also reported that Ukraine does not allow freight trains to Poland from China. Ukraine is blocking transit, demanding an increase in the number of permits for road transport, according to the Polish edition of Rzeczpospolita.
