Poet Efraín Barquero dies at 89, exponent of the Generation of 50 | National

This Monday the poet Sergio Efraín Barahona Jofré died at the age of 89, better known by his pseudonym Efraín Barquero, who was an exponent of the Literary Generation of 1950.

His name was adopted as a result of his childhood memories, which he lived in the town of Piedra Blanca, located in Teno, and the coast near Constitución.

Efraín received his secondary education at the Liceo de Talca. Later, he entered the University of Chile, where he studied Law. Besides, andstudied Pedagogy in Spanish at the Pedagogical Institute at the same time as Jorge Teillier, Pablo Guiñez and Rolando Cárdenas, all exponents of the literary Generation of 50.

While still studying, Efraín began to write his first texts. Later, in 1955, he joined La Gaceta de Chile as editorial secretary, a magazine under the direction of Pablo Neruda.

The Boatman’s Texts were highly influenced by rural life, such as land and country food.

In Salvador Allende’s government, Efraín served as a cultural attache in Colombia, alternating his lyrical life with his own responsibilities derived from citizen duty.

After the 1973 coup, he lived in exile in France, Returning to Chile after the return of democracy in 1990, he returned to Chile, but was disappointed with the contemporaneity of that time, so he inserted his residence between France and Chile..

The Minister of Cultures, Arts and Heritage regretted the departure of Barquero, noting that he was “an author who transformed the simple things in life into poetry. The National Literature Prize was a recognition of that talent and social sensitivity. We value his great legacy and send condolences to his family. ”

The poet years ago suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic pathology that would have generated death.

His funeral will be held this Wednesday in the Parque El Recuerdo.
