PlayStation 5 gets support for additional SSDs

The long-awaited update has finally arrived. From today, the PlayStation 5 will start supporting additional M.2 SSDs, which can expand the basic capacity of 825 GB. However, the update is currently only in beta and is available to selected users in the US, Canada, the UK, Germany and France. But other PS5 owners probably won’t have to wait too long either.

Of course, any SSD will not work, you will need M.2 PCIe Gen4. This type is still relatively new and is not so widespread yet, but you can easily get them in stores. The minimum read speed is set at 5,500 MB / s. Heatsink is also recommended so that the SSD does not overheat. Some discs have it in the package, but if not, it can be purchased without any problems. More detailed requirements can be found at this page.

Official support in the meantime confirmed Seagate, specifically the FireCuda 530 SSD. Of course, you can also choose another drive that meets the minimum requirements. Among the most popular are, for example, Samsung 980 Pro or WD SN850.

However, the update also brought other changes. New is the support for 3D audio for speakers built into the TV. Interestingly, the console measures the acoustics using a microphone in the DualSense controller.

The main screen has been redesigned, which you can customize more, the same applies to the friends and trophies section. The layout of the games has also changed, the PS4 and PS5 versions of the individual titles will now be displayed separately and each game will be clearly written as to which version it is. Sony wants to avoid the confusion that has occurred in some games before, because players installed the wrong version.

The latest innovation is the ability to change the resolution between 720p and 1080p in PlayStation Now. However, we will not use this in the Czech Republic, because this streaming service is still not available here.

If you were hoping for VRR support or 1440p resolution, then unfortunately you have to wait further. The update does not bring any of the functions.
