A wedding gift containing bom killed a software engineer. This incident occurred in India and had shocked the country. It turned out that this death gift was misdirected.

Reported from BBCthis event occurred on 23 February 2018. It started on a sunny summer afternoon on 23 February, five days after their wedding, Soumya Sekhar Sahu, a 26 year old software engineer, and his 22 year old wife Reema.

Reema was busy in the kitchen at her family’s newly built Patnagarh, a city in Orissa.

They were planning to roast eggplant and make lentil soup for lunch when Soumya heard the latch of their metal gate. A courier was standing outside, holding a parcel addressed to him.

A frayed sticker on the box said it was sent by SK Sharma from Raipur, some 230 km away from Patnagarh.

It turns out to be a bomb

Reema remembers her husband opening the box in the kitchen, and finding the package covered in green paper with white thread sticking out, while her 85-year-old grandfather, Jemamani Sahu, appeared from behind to look at the contents of the package.

“It looks like a wedding gift,” Soumya Sekhar told his wife. “The only thing I don’t know is the sender. I don’t know anyone in Raipur.”

As he pulled the thread, there was a flash of light and a huge explosion shook the kitchen. All three were thrown off their feet, and collapsed on the tiled floor, bleeding profusely. The explosion had shattered everything, sent the kitchen window flying into an adjacent field, and shattered the wall.

“Save me. I think I’m dying,” groaned Soumya Sekhar before losing consciousness.

That was the last time Reema heard her husband speak.

Burns stung his face and arms. Chest tight with smoke, he struggled to breathe.

Reema manages to crawl into the bedroom, and picks up the phone to call her mother-in-law, a principal at a local college. He passed out before he could make a call.

Video footage from the house minutes after the explosion showed desperate neighbors carrying away three injured residents in bed sheets to a waiting ambulance. Soumya Sekhar and Jemamani Sahu, who both suffered 90% burns, died while being transferred to hospital. Reema is slowly recovering in a cramped space in the burns ward of a government hospital.
