Piotr Beczala’s “Escape” from New York

The Polish star tenor Piotr Beczala is not spared the calamities surrounding the corona crisis. The crowd favorite is currently in quarantine together with his wife Katarzyna in his country house in southern Poland. “The police come every day and check that we are not leaving the property,” the 53-year-old reported in an interview with the APA.

The restrictions for the singer still apply until April 13th – after a great effort to even reach his own domicile in his home country. “We almost escaped from New York,” laughs the singer. After all, the Beczala couple were in the Big Apple because the rehearsals for the resumption of Massenet’s “Werther” were running there on March 16, before it was canceled due to the corona crisis. When the return flight options melted down due to the flight restrictions, the only thing left was the hasty departure via Chicago.

“But we’re fine,” says the audience favorite, relaxed because of the current situation, which is also affecting the release of his new album entitled “Vincero!” overshadowed, for which the singer sang verismo arias from Puccini to Mascagni for the first time and which will be released in May. But he is a person who does not worry about things over which he has no influence. “And if the opera houses are closed for a very long time, then I’ll retrain as a gardener,” jokes Beczala. (apa)
