Is there still a place available?

This art sculpture is currently being exhibited in a shopping mall in Beijing – and offers a seat to many people made of metal as well as a single one made of flesh and blood. In China this is usually enough space for all children in a family.

What about the siblings?

Something like that would be unthinkable for us, but for a long time the so-called one-child policy applied in China. If couples had more than one child, they were punished. So the government wanted to curb population growth. In 2015 the law was overturned.

And what is it now?

The government now allows up to three children – because it fears an aging society and a shortage of workers. But many in China don’t have enough money to have more than one child. Plus, they got used to the old rule.
