Physicist Peter Higgs has died – He had discovered the ‘God particle’ – 2024-04-09 17:13:37

The British physicist Peter Higgswinner of the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physics for the “Higgs boson”, also known as the “God particle”, which is considered the fundamental element of the fundamental structure of matter, died yesterday at the age of 94, the University of Edinburgh announced today.

“He died peacefully at home on Monday, April 8 after a short illness,” the University said in a statement.

The particle and its discovery

The existence of the particle has been the subject of scientific controversy for decades. After a series of experiments starting in 2008, his theory was proven correct by physicists working at the Large Hadron Collider at Cern in Switzerland in 2012.

The following year Higgs shared the Nobel Prize with Francois Angler, a Belgian theoretical physicist whose 1964 work contributed to the discovery.

A Fellow of the Royal Society, Higgs spent most of his academic life at the University of Edinburgh, which established the Higgs Center for Theoretical Physics in his honor in 2012.

He was a man who did not like publicity at all. On the day he received the Nobel, as the Guardian notes, he had left the house for lunch, soup and trout. A neighbor was the one who delivered the big news to Higgs as he was returning home.
