Costume sketches “fit” to the actors’ photos

Līga Krāsone calls the work on the film “Wild East. Where will the road lead” be an ideal option: already six months before the production of the film, the main characters and, most importantly, the actors who will play them were known.

“It would be terribly difficult for me to work without knowing what kind of costumes I create. Each actor is special, each person’s personality gives the image a unique character, and the costume designer can” taste “it from the heart when creating the image. tall, like Gerd Laposhka (Albert, a colorful servant in the film), can make it even brighter, and if he were small, I would have a very different image, so I’ve never been interested in model shows, because the costumes mostly “walk” on hangers. , but the actor brings the image to life, gives it a personality, “says the costume designer. Even Līga Krāsone creates costume sketches for the actor, taking into account the peculiarities of his figure and features from the very beginning.

Outfits need to get… younger during filming

There is no lack of intense events in the film – shooting, chasing, extreme hiking, so at the end of the film, the surviving characters look quite scratched, and the costumes are properly torn and dirty. However, the filming started with the last episodes, so the costumes had to become younger and cleaner during the work.

“Imre Kovbojs (actor Egons Dombrovskis), who does not say a word during the whole film, never changes clothes. It takes many years from the introduction of the film to the beginning of the events depicted in the plot, so “Imre’s clothes – an old linen coat and such cool, worn boots – had to be new and fresh.

Also, the final of the film was shot in Sweden from the very beginning, so the costume designer had to predict what would happen to the characters and their costumes in the various twists and turns of the story. “Of course, we had a specially aged dress and dirty shirts for the final episodes, but we had to guess exactly how these clothes will suffer as the storyline develops,” says the artist about the main challenges.

Jackets are brought from Sweden

As the selection of actors was done in time, Līga Krāsone had enough time to carefully create each image down to the smallest detail. As the budget did not allow all the costumes to be sewn again, part of the costume elements had to be rented. Some of the costumes are sought in Sweden, because Latvia has a rather modest offer of 19th century style clothes. For example, jackets from Sweden were brought to both cowboy Imrem and illusionist Otto (Kaspars Znotins). However, the main character Eva (Žanete Zvīgule) dresses were sewn by Līga Krāsone herself – it brought her special pleasure.

Real corsets for actresses

Although modern women are mostly horrified by the idea of corsets in which the waist of women was strangled in the 19th century without the slightest grace, they can be very useful for creating an image. Since Eva’s role character Žanete Zvīgule had to spend up to 12 hours in the costume, she created a very light and comfortable, fitting corset that looks identical to the historical ones, but is easy to wear. In turn Inese Kučinska, who is Eve ‘s educator and ally Magda, asked for exactly the kind of corset that the ladies wore in the 19th century, and so did the heroine Frau Esterhas, played by Dace Evers. The reason is that the posture of both ladies should be exactly the same as it was for the women dressed in corsets 150 years ago.

The favorite of the costume artist – Esterhāzi family

The broken, deceitful and rather extravagant counts of Vienna, mother and son Estherhaz (Dace Everss and Ivars Krasts), have become Līga Krāsone ‘s favorite characters, whose costumes especially brighten their character, while the actors’ contribution has inspired the creation of costumes.

“I had the pleasure of seeing how well they feel in these characters! I also gladly supported it in every way, for example, we made boots with a heel and a pointed toe for Ivars Krasts to allow him to feel even more in the image of such a naughty Viennese scythe,” says the costume designer.

The film “Wild East. Where will the road lead” will be shown in cinemas all over Latvia from October 7.

The film’s production companies are Fenixfilm and Deep Sea Studios, and the main creative team consists of a director, producer and screenwriter.
