About 100 people took part in the bicycle ticket “Let’s not let the bicycle lane” in Rīga, Dārziņi, said one of the event organizers Agita Vismane-Bitmane.

She noted that the locals had arrived and shared their experiences of living in the neighborhood, as well as the need for a bicycle lane. Representatives of several parties running in the Riga City Council’s extraordinary elections have also attended the event.
The residents of Rīgas Dārziņi have decided to demand the construction of a bicycle lane to Dārziņi.
The Riga municipality plans to borrow funds for the construction of the bicycle center Riga Center – Gardens at the Treasury. It is planned to borrow 150,000 euros for the construction of the section “Centrs-Ķengarags-Rumbula-Dārziņi” from the South Bridge to Ķengaraga Street, and 1.04 million euros for the construction of the Krasta Street cycle path.
As Agita Vismane-Bitmane, a representative of the residents of the Dārziņi neighborhood, pointed out earlier, the residents were shocked that the bicycle path would be built only up to Ķengaraga Street. After the appearance of this information, people have expressed their outrage on social networks.
It turned out that there was no decision not to build a path to Dārziņi, but there was no official information about it. Given that no official information has been provided to the residents of Dārziņi, they have decided to hold a picket.
As the agency LETA previously clarified in the Riga City Council, the intention to complete the bicycle route has not been abandoned, but it is necessary to find financing and achieve the alienation of land plots.
Veloceļš Centrs -Dārziņi is planned to be 17 kilometers long. Part of it is the Kengarags promenade, which was built about ten years ago. After the construction of the promenade, the bicycle path was extended in stages. Now it has been built up to Rumbula, there is still a section to Dārziņi, Aroniju Street.
The construction of the Veloceļa Centrs – Dārziņi is currently not possible to the end, because the bicycle path has several difficulties. One of them is real estate owned by private owners who did not give their consent to repurchase it for the needs of the municipality.
A total of 13 plots of land need to be alienated. Also, the possible solution crosses several ditches, as a result of which it would be necessary to build several bridges over the water flows into the Daugava in the development of infrastructure, as a result – the construction costs of bicycle infrastructure are measured in several million euros.
After evaluating the available financing, its possible use and location, it was decided to implement those sections that do not require huge investments – now the council decided to take a loan for the construction of the section from the South Bridge to Ķengaraga Street.
