Phishing scam, € 7000 disappeared from a girl’s account

Yet another scam with the phishing technique against a girl who has lost all her savings, about € 7000, invested in mail vouchers.

An email was received in all respects similar to those of the Italian Post Office. The fake message spoke of system updates and asked for confirmation on the data reported in the body of the message. What didn’t make the victim of this scam suspicious was that the data matched his own.

With the pandemic forcing us to spend a lot of time at home, we have a lot more time to spend online. This means that i scammers have more time to try to steal sensitive data, especially those of current accounts banking and postal services, to then complete their scams.

The case of the girl who got one delivered equal email to the official ones of Poste Italiane it is only the latest of many other phishing attempts, some successful, others not, which Federconsumatori treats every day. The most serious thing, in this specific case, is that after receiving the message by email asking for confirmation of their data, the victim also received one phone call by a self-styled customer service of Poste Italiane.

This allowed the scammers to complete the work. The victim realized that her money was gone only when, a few days later, she physically went to the post office. The biggest insult was that nobody of the internal security of the Poste Italiane system realized that something strange was happening.

In general, Federconsumatori warns against any message requesting confirmation of their bank details. Unfortunately, however, scammers are becoming more and more proficient and successful scams are increasing. Federconsumatori has estimated that we are in the order of + 33% of phishing cases.
