Phillipp Mwene Returns to Mainz: A Homecoming for the Austrian Footballer

Phillipp Mwene is leaving the Netherlands to join his former club.

The ÖFB legionnaire will return to Mainz 05 for the next three years, the German Bundesliga team announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Mwene has played a total of 73 competitive games (five goals, two assists) for PSV Eindhoven, including eight in the Champions League qualifier, 13 in the Europa League and one game in the Conference League. The 29-year-old also celebrated winning the Dutch Cup twice and the Super Cup three times in Eindhoven.

Mwene: “Like coming home”

“In Phillipp Mwene we are gaining a player who we know well and who is an excellent match for us both in terms of sport and personality, so we have worked long and patiently on this signing. You don’t have to explain Phillipp to Mainz 05 – he fully identifies with him with the style of play here and doesn’t need any time to get used to it. With his variability and his footballing qualities, but also as a guy, he will strengthen our team optimally”, says 05 sport director Christian Heidel about the returnee.

Mwene, who has seven appearances for Austria’s first team, played for Mainz from 2018 to 2021. “For me it feels like coming home,” said the Viennese, who once came to VfB Stuttgart from Austria Wien’s offspring and to Mainz via 1. FC Kaiserslautern (2016 – 2018).
