Suspect Charged with Five Counts of Murder in Philadelphia Mass Shooting

Philadelphia, PA – Kimbrady Carriker, the suspect in a deadly mass shooting that occurred earlier this week, has been charged with five counts of murder. The 40-year-old was also charged with 11 total offenses, including attempted murder, reckless endangerment, aggravated assault, and carrying a firearm without a valid permit.

During his first court hearing, Carriker was held without bail for the murders. Judge Naomi Williams stated that public safety is a clear concern and that there are no conditions that can ensure the safety of the community.

Carriker is also facing charges related to several other victims of the shooting, including a 33-year-old woman, her two 2-year-old twins, a 13-year-old, and a 10-year-old boy. The woman and her twins were inside a Jeep Cherokee when they were injured. Carriker allegedly fired multiple shots into the vehicle, causing cuts from flying glass to the driver and one of the twins, while the other twin was shot in the leg. The 10-year-old boy, who was in the passenger seat, was not injured but is considered a victim due to the danger he faced.

A police officer jumped into the Jeep and drove the victims to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center for treatment. The injured 13-year-old boy, who was walking on the street, was shot multiple times in the leg.

Carriker, who lives just a few blocks from the shooting scene, had made disturbing posts on social media prior to the incident. He was wearing a bulletproof vest during the shooting and owned the guns used in the mass shooting. Carriker has a history of misdemeanor drug and gun charges from 2003.

The names of the five people killed in the shooting were released by the police: Daujan Brown, 15; Lashyd Merritt, 22; Dymir Stanton, 29; Joseph Wamah, Jr., 31; and Ralph Moralis, 59.

The shooting took place on the eve of Independence Day in the Kingsessing neighborhood of Philadelphia. At least 50 shots were fired, and multiple vehicles were struck. Police officers encountered Carriker while responding to the scene and were able to chase him down and corner him in an alley. He was wearing a bulletproof vest and had multiple magazines, an AR-style rifle, a handgun, and a police scanner.

There is currently no known connection between the victims and the shooter, and investigators are still determining the motive for the gunfire.

Mayor Jim Kenney called for a reexamination of gun control measures, stating that the incident was disgraceful but unfortunately all too common in America.

Family members of the victims gathered outside Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where they received the devastating news of their loved ones’ deaths. Marie, the mother of 22-year-old Lashyd Merritt, expressed her grief, saying, “You took my son. You took my baby.” Merritt was shot several times on Greenway Avenue while running to a store across from his house.

State and local leaders visited the neighborhood to console grieving families and residents, acknowledging the impact the shooting has had on the community.

The investigation into the mass shooting is ongoing, and Carriker’s next court date is scheduled for July 24.
