The EU allowed the use of pills for coronavirus

The European regulator has approved the use of Pfizer tablets for the treatment of coronavirus, and Denmark is the first in the EU to approve the use of Merck’s Molnupiravir tablets.

The European Medicines Regulator (EMA) on Thursday, December 16, authorized the use of Pfizer’s Pfizer COVID-19 tablets pending approval as a last resort to contain the Omicron strain surge. This is reported on website regulator.

It is noted that Paklovid tablets have been recognized as innovative because they do not need to be injected or taken intravenously, which makes them more affordable.

“Medicines that are not yet registered in the EU can be used to treat adults with COVID-19 who do not require supplemental oxygen and have an increased risk of progression to severe illness,” the EMA said.

Pfizer tablets are a combination of the new molecule PF-07321332 and the antiviral HIV ritonavir taken as separate tablets.

Possible side effects are taste changes, diarrhea and vomiting. Pregnant women should not use the drug.

The EMA said it is also launching a “re-review” of Pfizer tablets that could lead to full approval in a few months.

Meanwhile, Denmark on Thursday was the first in the EU to approve Merck’s Molnupiravir pills for the treatment of COVID-19, reports Reuters.

It is noted that the use of the drug concerns patients at risk, in particular the elderly.

“We believe that the benefits of treatment (with Molnupiravir – ed.) Outweigh the disadvantages for those patients who are most at risk of seriously contracting COVID-19,” said Kirstin Moll Harbo, chief physician of the Health Department.

The developer claims that according to trials, the drug halves the likelihood of hospitalization or death with COVID-19.

As reported in November EMA Recommends Merck Coronavirus Pills – Lagevrio (also known as Molnupiravir) for the treatment of COVID-19. The regulator noted that the drug can be used to treat adults with COVID-19 who do not require supplemental oxygen and are at increased risk of developing severe COVID-19.

Pfizer previously said that its pills Paksevid reduced the number of hospitalizations and mortality among vulnerable people by almost 90%.
