Peter Kraft from Ettleben celebrates his 75th birthday on June 4th. His commitment even brought the Federal Cross of Merit to the teacher.
Wrzburg was bombed when Peter Kraft was born there on June 4, 1945 shortly after the end of the war. He spent the first years of his life with his mother Magdalena in their Rhineland homeland, Moers, before his father Philipp returned from captivity and brought the family back to Thngersheim.
His parents, who will have two more children after him, make it possible for him to attend a grammar school in Wrzburg. Kraft is interested in history, art, philosophy. He studies at the University of Education in Wrzburg, where he graduates as an elementary school teacher. Power is musically talented: in the boarding school of the Augustinian monks he learned the piano and double bass while studying recorder. He teaches himself to play the trumpet and guitar.
In 1972 he returned to Ettleben and worked as a teacher at the secondary school in Werneck. Because teaching staff are lacking in Oberndorf, he is called to the Pestalozzi School in 1986 to promote learning. Originally only “borrowed” for a year, Kraft gets used to the new tasks and remains until retirement. At the age of 50, he also completed his studies in special education in Wrzburg from 1995 to 1998.
Federal Cross of Merit for Youth Work
As a young adult, Kraft volunteers in youth work in Thngersheim. He is meanwhile DJK chairman, parish council chairman, works in various committees and working groups. In 1972 he joined the Kreisjugendring, in 1975 he was elected its chairman. In 1981, Kraft took over the chairmanship of the district youth ring for eight years. In 1993, Kraft was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his services to youth work.
Kraft met his wife Maria, who was also heavily involved in Catholic youth work, at a conference in 1967 about youth work, where it “sparked” as Maria still says today. In 1970 the couple married in Wrzburg, in 1973 and 1976 Shne Holger and Jochen were born and completed the family in the newly built house in Ettleben.
Active as a local politician
Youth work is not enough, Kraft began his career in 1984 as a local politician in the Wernecker municipal council, to which he had been a member for 24 years. After the first parliamentary term, he left the CSU parliamentary group with three colleagues and took over the chairmanship of the new Freie Whler. Kraft only acts as the third mayor of the market town, then he applies for the mayor’s office in 2008 and loses. He received the silver citizen medal of the Werneck market for his municipal political merits.
In private, Peter Kraft is a family man. He and his wife Maria are also enthusiastic dancers. A hobby that both pursue at every opportunity. After his political career, Kraft sings for a few more years as a second bass in the village choir, the Liederkranz Ettleben. On June 4, he celebrates his 75th birthday with his family.
