Peru to install Russian vaccine production plant Sputnik V

President Pedro Castillo said on Monday that a plant for the production of Sputnik V vaccines against the coronavirus will be installed in Peru after reaching an agreement with Russia.

In a message to the nation, Castillo said briefly that “as a result of negotiations between the Peruvian government and the Russian government, the installation of a Sputnik vaccine production plant in the country has been coordinated.” Later the Ministry of Health will give more details, he added.

Russian vaccines against the coronavirus are already manufactured in Argentina, at the plant of a company in that South American country. Until now, Peru has not used the Russian vaccine, but it has used the Sinopharm of Chinese origin and the Pfizer-BioNTech, developed in an American-German partnership.

Other Latin American countries that have used the Russian vaccine are Venezuela, Mexico, Bolivia and Guatemala, among others.

Peru is the nation with the highest death rate from coronavirus in the world. Since it was detected in the country, more than 198,000 people have died and more than 2 million have been infected, according to the Ministry of Health.
