People Power Party Announces Results of Second Primary: Emergency Response Commissioner Koo Ja-ryong and Former Supreme Council Member Jang Ye-chan Win Nominations

On the 28th, the People Power Party announced the results of the second primary in 26 constituencies. In some constituencies, four incumbent lawmakers were eliminated from nomination for the first time, but the current incumbent lawmakers’ strong stance in the primary continued. Excluding proportional lawmaker Cho Soo-jin, among the 18 active members of the constituency who accepted the results of the primary on this day, only three, including lawmaker Kim Yong-pan (Daegu Dalseobyeong), Lee Joo-hwan (Busan Yeonje), and Jeon Bong-min (Busan Suyeong), were eliminated.

In Suyeong-gu, Busan, former Supreme Youth Council member Jang Ye-chan, who was a preliminary candidate outside the 30s, defeated incumbent lawmaker Jeon Bong-min to receive the nomination. Former Supreme Council member Jang met with reporters and said, “I am so thrilled to have been chosen, and I will contribute to sweeping all seats in Busan using Suyeong-gu as a stepping stone.” He added, “I, representing our party’s 30s, and emergency committee member Koo Ja-ryong, representing our party’s 40s, “Now that I have won the primary, I would like to say that the People Power Party nomination reform is taking place and I am impressed,” he said.

In Yangcheongap, Seoul, Koo Ja-ryong, a member of the Emergency Response Committee in his 40s, defeated former Supreme Council member Su-jin Cho, who is proportionally active. Former emergency committee member said, “When I first recruited talent, I felt like I was not one. “I don’t think I choose my own journey,” he said. “Thank you for opening the way for me to reach the finals.”

In Yeonje-gu, Busan, former lawmaker Kim Hee-jung defeated incumbent lawmaker Lee Joo-hwan of the region, and this lawmaker was also unable to receive nomination. There was also a water change in the ‘garden’ TK (Daegu, Gyeongbuk). Former Daegu mayor Kwon Young-jin of Daegu Dalseobyeong defeated incumbent lawmaker Kim Yong-pan in the primary. In this day’s primary, four incumbent lawmakers suffered hardships.

However, the remaining incumbent lawmakers continued to be strong. In Ulsan Nam-gu, former representative Kim Ki-hyun defeated former Ulsan mayor Park Maeng-woo in the primary and will run for a fifth term. In Suseong-Gap, Daegu, 5-term lawmaker Joo Ho-young won and is now facing a 6th term.

In Geumjeong-gu, Busan, Rep. Baek Jong-heon, in Busan Jin-gu-eul, Rep. Lee Heon-seung, in Daegu Buk-gu-eul, Rep. Kim Seung-soo, and in Daegu Seo-gu, Rep. Kim Sang-hoon each won the primary to secure their constituencies. Rep. Kim Jeong-jae of Buk-gu, Pohang-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, also won the primary and will run for a third term. Rep. Seo Beom-soo won in Ulju-gun, Ulsan, and Rep. Kim Seok-ki won in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. In Gumi-gap, North Gyeongsang Province, Rep. Koo Ja-geun, former Chief of Staff to former President Kim Ki-hyun, defeated former Presidential Office Administrator Kim Chan-young. Representative Song Eon-seok from Gimcheon, North Gyeongsang Province, and Representative Lim Ja from Sangju and Mungyeong, North Gyeongsang Province each won the primary without any upset.

In Bundang-eul, Gyeonggi Province, which attracted attention, Kim Eun-hye, former senior secretary for public relations in the President’s Office, defeated party spokesperson Kim Min-soo in the primary. In Songpa-gun, Seoul, former party chairman Kim Geun-sik defeated former presidential office administrator Kim Seong-yong in the primary.

A runoff election district was also announced. In a primary of two or more candidates, if the first-place vote-getter does not receive a majority, the first- and second-place candidates will participate in a runoff. Rep. Kim Hee-gon of Dongrae-gu, Busan, entered the primary runoff with former Blue House administrator Seo Ji-young. In Pohang, Nam, and Ulleung in North Gyeongsang Province, incumbent lawmaker Kim Byeong-wook and former Blue House Spring and Autumn Director Lee Sang-hwi will vote in the runoff. In Daegu’s Jung-gu and Nam-gu, Rep. Lim Byeong-heon will face the runoff against Do Tae-woo, former president of the Free Lawyers Association.

In Sacheon, Namhae, and Hadong in Gyeongsangnam-do, former Deputy Director of the National Intelligence Service Seo Cheon-ho won. Former Deputy Director Seo was convicted of using the police to manipulate public opinion during the Lee Myung-bak administration, but received a pardon from the Lunar New Year special envoy on the 6th. However, it became controversial when it became known that he had applied for a private nomination to the People Power Party before the pardon was announced.

In addition, in Sejong City, former Sejong City Deputy Mayor for Economic Affairs Lee Joon-bae, in Daejeon Daedeok-gu, former Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission Vice Chairman Park Kyung-ho, in Daejeon Yoo Seong-gap, former Daejeon Police Commissioner Yoon So-sik, and in Gwangju City, Gyeonggi-do, former Party Council Chairman Hwang Myeong-ju won the primary and advanced to the finals. Nomination Management Committee Chairman Jeong Young-hwan said, “The incumbents defended themselves more than expected,” and Lee Cheol-gyu, a member of the diplomatic mission, said, “The election must be won. (Incumbent lawmaker) Replacement is not the only answer. “The strongest wins.”
