Pentagon locked after violent incident at bus and metro station: suspect and agent died | Abroad

More details about the violence are expected at a Pentagon press conference. The link between the violence and the police officer’s stabbing is still unclear. Authorities did not immediately provide details or the sequence of events.

The shooting incident took place around 11 a.m. local time (5 p.m. in the Netherlands). An AP reporter heard several shots near the Pentagon, then a pause, and then at least one more shot. Another AP journalist heard the police yell “shooter.” The Pentagon reported that the building was locked down due to “police activity”. Metros and buses had to avoid the station.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and General Mark Milley, chairman of the Army’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, were at the White House at the time of the incident for a meeting with President Joe Biden.

In 2010, two security agents from the Pentagon Force Protection Agency, the agency responsible for Pentagon security, were injured when a man fired on them during a security checkpoint at the transit station. The officers, who survived, fired back. The gunman, identified as John Patrick Bedell, was fatally injured.

The bus platform is steps away from the Pentagon and is part of the Pentagon Transit Center. This is a major entrance to the Pentagon and is used daily by thousands of staff entering and exiting the building. The bus platform is used by several bus lines in the area.

The Pentagon Building is located in Arlington County, Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington DC
