The state of health of the “king” is worrying. The São Paulo hospital where Pelé is being treated announced Wednesday that his health was deteriorating. The 82-year-old football legend has been battling colon cancer since 2021 and is now suffering from “kidney and heart failure”.
“The patient has oncological disease progression and requires more extensive care,” the doctors explain in their health bulletin. Pelé was admitted to the Albert Einstein hospital in São Paulo on November 29 for a re-evaluation of his chemotherapy treatment, following the discovery of colon cancer in September 2021.
On Instagram, Pelé’s two daughters, Kely Nascimento and Flavia Arantes, said their father would be spending Christmas in the hospital, but were rather optimistic, posting a photo of them all smiling. “Our Christmas at home failed. We have decided with the doctors that, for various reasons, it is better to stay here, with all the care provided by our new family at the Albert Einstein hospital,” they said, adding that they will continue to prepare caipirinhas, the typical Brazilian cocktails, to make festive this weekend at the hospital.
They also promised to provide an update on Pele next week.
The one considered by many to be the greatest footballer of all time has received many messages of support since his hospitalisation, particularly from Kylian Mbappé, who called in early December to “pray for the King”.

Despite his state of health, King Pelé continues to communicate through his social networks, and in particular he congratulated the Argentique team on their victory at the World Cup in Qatar. “Congratulations to Argentina! Diego (Maradona, ed) will surely be smiling now,” he wrote on Instagram, referring to the Argentine football legend, who passed away just over two years ago.
