Payday 3: The Real Killer Clowns Take on New York with Improved Gameplay and Controversial Microtransactions

The real killer clowns

Dallas, Wolf, Chains and Hoxton return to earn even more money in Payday 3. After much speculation and rumors, the time has come for Payday 3 to be released on September 21, 2023.

Payday has a reputation for being one of the best co-op shooters and would like to maintain this reputation. It has everything a criminal mastermind wants. From robbing various types of banks to stealing drugs from mob bosses, Payday has it all when it comes to robbing. Together with three friends you can choose how you will commit the robbery. Do you go in heavily armed and pick a fight with the authorities? Or do you quietly enter through the back door to escape with everything unseen? To make this core even stronger, Starbreeze comes with improvements on all fronts to come in strong with Payday 3. But will it live up to expectations?

From the White House to the Big Apple

Payday 3 is set in New York. After the gang’s retirement in Payday 2, they’ve picked up the masks again to make New York unsafe. Where this decision comes from remains to be seen, but one thing is certain and that is that the game will be packed with action. With the switch to Unreal Engine, the graphical upgrade may not be the biggest step after 7 years, but the game is moving forward in terms of mechanics.

There are many things to look forward to, from new mechanics like it slides to close doors. Closing doors was seriously impossible. The robbers have always had two strategies to choose from: stealth in loud. The new telephone gadget opens many doors for both tactics. To see what impact all these new additions will have, we will discuss both possibilities below.

Police Brutality

The art of loud, better known as guns blazing. This form of robbery is the most popular because it is nice and easy to pop while you are stealing money. The police you fight against are even better equipped this year than before. For example, every kind of unit has been changed and even a whole new unit has been added.

For example, the normal agents are a bit smarter and they will walk more in formation. The Tasers can completely shut you down, but have also gained a weak spot. The Cloakers can be placed next to the one shot also destroy your gadgets. The Bulldozer seems to be even scarier than before. In addition to this unit being heavily armored, the weapon has been turned into an automatic shotgun. This is extra dangerous because the Bulldozer can now also rush at you like a bull to make your life miserable. The new unit is also called the Nader. This enemy throws gas and stun grenades to keep you away from certain areas.

To counteract all these features, Starbreeze has also given the players some extras. For example, you can use the phone to hack and explode cameras to take out enemies or to call in an escape vehicle. There is also the new Overkill weapon: you can invoke this weapon once and everyone can pick it up. These are a kind of heavy weapons that can turn the situation in your favor. For example, you have the grenade launcher as an Overkill weapon to remove groups of enemies from your screen at once.

Sneaking around has never had so many options

The art of stealth was my personal favorite in Payday 2. In Payday 3 they extend this approach much further. This way you can do almost all actions without wearing the mask. Putting on the mask is also the moment when the weapons come out and there is no going back. This alone provides many more options to tackle a mission. Not only that: if you are in a restricted area without a mask, you can be escorted out by a guard with a warning. These things all sound simple, but for a Payday 2 veteran, this is very refreshing.

The phone has an important function in stealth. You can start using it to hack into anything, giving you more visibility or distracting guards. There are also several gadgets that can give you a great advantage. For example, you have a camera that you can throw wherever you want, even on guards. This ensures that you always know where everyone is, making it easy to dodge them and rob them completely empty. There’s no better feeling than stripping down an entire couch without setting off the alarm.

A money wolf future

After the launch of Payday 3, Starbreeze deployed a live service plan. Whether this plan will be positive remains to be seen… As it stands now, it could become one of the worst live services ever when it comes to microtransactions without pay to win.

Starbreeze has always done paid DLCs. This is also certain for Payday 3 and there is already a season pass to buy. Well this isn’t the worst of it and looking at Payday 2 this also came with strong content. It just doesn’t stop there, unfortunately. There will also be paid skins and there are rumors of a battle pass. All of these things don’t sound like the end of the world in principle, but listing them all can make the game fail.

For example, if you look at Call of Duty, a game that is also full of various microtransactions, you will see that at least they still give free content. Normally a company opts for cosmetics or paid content, Starbreeze is short of money and opts for both. The moment every new thing is behind a paywall is the moment the game starts to die. Something I hope not for this beloved franchise.

All in all, we can expect a nice release from Payday 3 if we look at the previous two Paydays. They both got off to a strong start because the core of the games is very strong. As a Payday veteran, I’m positive for the release because all the promised additions could make the game even better than Payday 2, a game that’s still going strong. Whether it will actually have a smooth release remains to be seen.

As it stands, it could be one of the worst live services ever when it comes to microtransactions without pay to win.
