After hours in the harbor in Holwerd, motorists who took the ferry from Ameland to the mainland on Monday had to return to the Wadden Island. Due to problems with the car bridge, they were unable to get off the boat.
According to the Leeuwarder Courant it concerns at least 65 cars. People without a car could get off the boat, which arrived in the Frisian harbor around eight o’clock.

After hours of waiting in the Frisian harbor, the ferry returned to Ameland. The passengers have been accommodated in an emergency shelter.
Because the ferry blocked the mooring place in Holwerd, the subsequent boat from Ameland could not dock either. That ferry therefore also returned to the Wadden Island after departure.
Rijkswaterstaat expects that the car bridge can be repaired in the night from Monday to Tuesday. This means that the ferry service between Ameland and Holwerd – spelled Holwert in Frisian – can sail again on Tuesday morning at the earliest.
It will be quite a job to get all stuck passengers to the mainland as quickly as possible on Tuesday morning, fears director Ger van Langen of the Wagenborg ferry service. Extra sailings were already planned for Tuesday.
Van Langen therefore does not dare to say in the night from Monday to Tuesday what time the victims can sail to Holwerd on Tuesday.
