This month, the federal government must consider the security of supply in the electricity market and its consequences for the nuclear phase-out. According to Magnette, there will be no reason to go back on the decision to close. “The coalition agreement is clear: if the capacity remuneration mechanism (CRM) ensures sufficient supplies, all reactors will be closed,” he said on Friday.
Magnette, on the other hand, does not want to speak out for or against the construction of a new type of reactors, which would be smaller and produce less waste. “But I think nuclear energy has many flaws,” Magnette said. “It costs an awful lot of money to build, there are safety issues, reliability issues, and then there’s the waste that persists for hundreds or thousands of years.”
At the same time, the socialist admits that it is not an ideal solution to build new gas-fired power stations. “We are here at a climate summit where for the first time there is very open talk about stopping fossil energy sources. But you also have to ensure security of supply at acceptable prices.”
He remains an ardent defender of renewable energy. “In a world without CO2 emissions, life is better for the vast majority of people. A world without CO2 emissions is a better, more pleasant and fairer world,” says Magnette.
MR chairman Georges-Louis Bouchez responded with a tweet: “So PS is not concerned with security of supply, price and even less with the planet. “A little gas,” he says? The CRM is 87% gas and at the same time he asks to stop subsidizing fossil fuels?”
