Leverkusen Bayer Leverkusen’s striker Patrik Schick scored 16 goals in the first half of the season and is in the final selection for Fifa’s “World Goal of the Year”. At the start of the second half against Union Berlin, the positive tested Nadiem Amiri fails.
Patrik Schick could soon be mentioned in the same breath as previous winners Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Mohamed Salah. The Bayer Leverkusen striker is one of the three finalists for the Puskas Prize, which the world football association Fifa has been awarding for the “World Goal of the Year” for several years. In the summer, the 25-year-old hit from the center line in his Czechs’ European Championship game against Scotland. Schick would be the first Leverkusen professional to receive this honor.

Nobody under the Bayer Cross would have anything against it if they received the award. But it would be even more important to them that Schick builds on the performances he showed in the first half of the season. With 16 goals, he set a club record and for the first time showed constant after a changeable debut season, which is why Bayer transferred 26.5 million euros for his services to AS Roma in 2020. The fact that Schick is now being traded by top teams from England and Spain should not surprise anyone who has watched the 1.91-meter man at work in recent months.

This Saturday (3:30 p.m.), Schick and the Werkself receive Union Berlin in the BayArena. The Köpenicker have recently proven to be tough opponents of the Leverkusen. In 2021, the clubs split 1: 1 twice, and once the capital city club beat Bayer 1: 0. Schick remained without a goal in all duels.

Both teams are missing important forces at the start of the second half of the season. Berlin, which was trained by the Swiss Urs Fischer, has to do without, among other things, attackers Taiwo Awoniyi (Nigeria) and Sheraldo Becker (Corona) who are at the Africa Cup. For his compatriot on the Werkself sideline, Gerardo Seoane, the task is to find a replacement for defenders Edmond Tapsoba (Burkina-Faso) and Odilon Kossounou (Ivory Coast), who are also seconded to the continental championships. In addition, Charles Aránguiz (calf problems) and Nadiem Amiri (Corona) are missing.
