Paternity, sick parent… Marlène Schiappa calls to “rethink family leave”

Confinement has reshuffled the cards of family life, says Marlène Schiappa, in an interview with the newspaper The Parisian , this Saturday, June 6. She seems to be position in the perspective of a future reshuffle, to occupy for example a ministry extended to the Family.

Meanwhile, the current Secretary of State for Gender Equality outlines several avenues for the French to live a better work-life balance.

Harmonize professional and family life

” The pandemic reshuffled the cards, especially on our relationship to work and time, she believes. We have to think about questions of harmony between professional and family life. “

The Secretary of State notes that “During a crisis, the family is a safe haven and the first place of solidarity”.

Believing that he “Will have to work a lot” after the health crisis, Marlène Schiappa thinks that “This must be accompanied by support for family time”, especially towards “Sandwiched generations who have to take care of both their children and their parents.”

Extend paternity leave to one month

She pleads for “The right for men to devote themselves to their homes” and proposes to register in law “Extending paternity leave to one month, as 300 French companies have done.”

Currently, an employed father can take paid leave of eleven consecutive days, which must begin within four months of the birth of a child.

Create “sick parent leave” and “young grandparent leave”

Marlène Schiappa also notes that “Many grandparents are still active” . She recommends creating a “Sick parent leave”, as there is sick child leave today. The active person could take a few days, for example, to take care of an elderly parent.

A request that meets the will of the government ofcompensate caregiver leave. This leave exists, but the implementation of his compensation will not be made until October 2020.

The daily allowance will be paid by the family allowance fund to the caregiver up to € 43 (for a person living in a couple) or € 52 (for a person living alone).

Marlène Schiappa is also considering the creation of a “Young grandparent leave” to visit the newborn.

Finally, since families are today “Plural”, she would like these leaves to be open to blended families.
