Passive Lifestyle During Pandemic Increases Prevalence of Heart Disease

TANGERANG, investor.id – Heart disease is still the highest contributor to death rates in the world. People’s lifestyles are increasingly passive during the Covid-19 pandemic, contributing to the increase in the prevalence of heart disease.

In the midst of the euphoria of the declining curve of the Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia, heart disease still ranks as the first cause of death worldwide. The majority of the passive lifestyle in the productive age in urban areas is considered to be one of the causes. In fact, heart disease can actually be prevented by routine and comprehensive early detection, which is adjusted to the health history and lifestyle of each individual.

This was stated by a Cardiologist and Blood Vessel Specialist at Siloam Hospitals Lippo Village, Dr. Antonia Anna Lukito in a webinar session entitled “Early Detection of Heart Disease: Is It Possible?” organized by Siloam Hospitals Lippo Village and Roche Indonesia, Thursday (18/11/2021).

“Heart disease has caused at least 15 out of 1,000 people in Indonesia to suffer from cardiovascular disease in 2018. Symptoms of heart disease are often not realized by the sufferer, especially if the patient is young and productive,” he said.

In fact, symptoms such as shortness of breath accompanied by cold sweats, weakness, palpitations, or left chest pain, most likely indicate symptoms of heart disease that need to be detected and treated early.

Therefore, early heart checks also play an important role in determining what further tests to do according to the condition of each individual’s heart health.

“Symptoms of heart disease in the early stages are often perceived as general symptoms that do not endanger health. Thus, many patients only have their heart checked when they have experienced severe symptoms,” explained Dr. Antonia.

Other countries even recommend their citizens to have regular heart checks at least once every five years from the age of 18. It should be more frequent if you have a history of certain health or lifestyle.

“At this stage, early detection has become an absolute thing to do to prevent more delays in handling heart disease,” concluded Dr. Antonia.
