Passenger Triggers Panic on Malaysia Airlines Flight from Sydney, Leading to Arrests

Sydney

A passenger triggers panic in the middle of a Malaysia Airlines flight. As a result, the plane turned back to the airport and the passengers were arrested.

Quoted from Daily Mail, Tuesday (15/8/2023) flight MH122 took off from Sydney airport on Monday (14/8) at 13.40 local time and headed for Kuala Lumpur. However, at 15:47 or after two hours in the sky, the plane landed back at the original airport.

The plane is parked at the end of the Sydney airport runway. After landing, the plane was surrounded by police cars, ambulances and other emergency services. A passenger posted a message on X, formerly Twitter, that another passenger was threatening the crew and people in the cabin.

Video footage shows the man saying his name is Muhammad

One of the passengers said there was a man who said his name ‘Mohammed’ and referred to as ‘Servant of Allah’. He also challenged other passengers nearby and repeated they too were ‘Servants of Allah’.

He became even more emotional, then pointed at other passengers and shouted ‘Say it!’.

One passenger said the man then unzipped his backpack, put his hand inside the bag, then threatened loudly to blow up the plane.

After the plane landed and the situation was under control, the 45-year-old man was arrested by the Australian Federal Police (AFP). After checking, there were no dangerous objects in the bag.

Meanwhile, other passengers were evacuated from the plane.

“He is expected to be charged tonight,” a spokesman said AFP.

“An emergency response plan was put in place and evacuation began once it was deemed safe for passengers and crew,” they said.

Many flights are cancelled

The atmosphere at Sydney airport became chaotic because of the passenger’s behavior. A Sydney Airport spokesperson said there were 32 domestic flights canceled (16 in + 16 out), with delays of up to 90 minutes for other domestic flights at that time.

“There are currently no international flight cancellations. Passengers are encouraged to check with their airlines regarding the status of their flights,” he said.
