Parliamentary Advisor Fired After Involvement in Clash Between Atlético and Cruzeiro Fans

Suspected of involvement in the fight between Atlético and Cruzeiro fans last Saturday (2/3), parliamentary advisor Marcos Vinícius Oliveira de Melo, better known as Vinicin, was fired from the office of Belo Horizonte councilor, César Gordin (Solidariedade) , “Gordin da Galoucura”.

In a note, the parliamentarian stated that the advisor’s dismissal will take place until the incident has been investigated.

“I am neither the police nor the Justice to investigate or judge the actions of those who work in my office outside of their working hours, in their private lives. But, until all the facts are investigated and those responsible are identified, I have decided to immediately dismiss my advisor who was cited as having been involved in the fight over the weekend,” he said.

The confrontation ended with the death of app delivery man Lucas Elias Vieira Silva, aged 28, who was from Cruzeiro. Two other people were shot, but are not at risk of death.

Vinicim was arrested in 2010 for the death of Otávio Fernandes, a Cruzeiro fan, and was sentenced to 17 years in prison. In 2018, he was also involved in the beating of a member of the Blue Mafia before the 2018 Minas Gerais Championship final.

“I gave opportunities to those who made mistakes in the past, so that they would have the opportunity for decent work to support their family. (…) Certain that the recovery and resocialization of anyone who made a mistake in the past goes through sport, I will continue steadfastly with my social projects, training citizens and sports champions”, the councilor wrote in a note.

“As everyone knows and I’m proud to say, I built my career in sport and in Torcida Galoucura. I was a professional fighter, fight teacher, sports secretary of Santa Luzia, president of the fans between 2012 and 2016, a period in which there was no death due to fan fight in Minas Gerais I have always been thoughtful in my positions, valuing dialogue, respect for public money and legality.

In my office, several people work who have gone through this journey with me, performing different functions. I gave opportunities to those who made mistakes in the past, so that they would have the opportunity for decent work to support their family.

However, I lead my advisors and athletes by example, and I do not accept participation in fights of any kind, like the one that occurred on Saturday (2/3).

I am not the police, nor the Court to investigate or judge the actions of those who work in my office outside of their working hours, in their private lives. However, until all the facts are investigated and those responsible are identified, I decided to immediately dismiss my advisor who was cited as having been involved in the fight over the weekend.

Certain that the recovery and resocialization of anyone who made a mistake in the past passes through sport, I will continue steadfastly with my social projects, forming citizens and sports champions.

I hope that the authorities listen to the fans more, so that fights no longer occur. This is a complex social phenomenon and to be truly resolved it must not be treated with simplistic solutions.

Finally, I reinforce that I am very sorry about Saturday’s tragedy, and I hope that justice will be fair, punishing those responsible according to their actions and based on the events that happened there.”
