SHNet, Jakarta– Obesity is a global problem that impacts 2 billion of the world’s population and threatens public health, including in Indonesia.

Dr. Eva Susanti, S.Kp., M.Kes Director of Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (P2PTM), Indonesian Ministry of Health said, “In Indonesia itself, in the past 10 years there has been a significant increase in obesity from 10.5% in 2007 to 21.8% in 2018, so that obesity is now classified as a disease that requires comprehensive intervention.”

In commemoration of World Obesity Day 2024, Nutrifood, together with the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenkes RI) and the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency of the Republic of Indonesia (Badan POM RI) educate the public about the importance of limiting consumption of sugar, salt and fat (#BatasiGGL) and understanding how to read packaging labels.

In this education, Nutrifood, the Ministry of Health and the Indonesian POM Agency also invite the public to become agents of change (agent of change) by disseminating information as widely as possible regarding smart ways to choose foods with low GGL through educational content on social media to prevent and overcome obesity.

Dr. Eva explained, “As an effort to tackle obesity cases in Indonesia, the government has issued a Minister of Health Regulation (Permenkes) regarding the inclusion of information on sugar, salt and fat in processed and ready-to-eat foods, as well as providing education about the importance of this regulation. Through health transformation, we have also encouraged the public to carry out early detection of risk factors for non-communicable diseases by measuring height and weight, as well as understanding the risks of consuming sugar, salt and fat. Currently we are also focusing on movements that involve the community in the context of preventing and controlling obesity as a risk factor for NCDs (GENTAS) by making efforts for the Indonesian people to carry out CERDIK, namely regular health checks at least once a year with detection of priority diseases, getting rid of cigarette smoke, exercising regularly at least 30 minutes every day, a balanced diet by measuring the contents of my plate, getting enough rest and managing stress well. “By implementing this CERDIK pattern, we strive for a healthy and intelligent Indonesian society.”

“Of course, collaborative efforts from various parties, including private sector actors and society, are very necessary for more effective prevention and treatment of obesity. “Apart from that, it is also important for each individual to spread this education as widely as possible through various platforms,” explained Dr. Eva.

Susana, STP, M.Sc., PD.Eng. In line with the theme of World Obesity Day this year, where World The Obesity Federation gave the freedom to raise the topic of obesity from various perspectives, Nutrifood also chose the topic “Being an Agent of Change” to inspire everyone to spread education about the importance of limiting consumption of sugar, salt, fat and reading packaging labels so that more and more people can avoid the risk of obesity. can cause prediabetes, diabetes and other non-communicable diseases.”

Putri MJ, Nutritionist and Content Creator, said that obesity is a risk factor for non-communicable diseases such as diabetes mellitus, heart disease, cancer, hypertension and other metabolic and non-metabolic diseases and contributes to the cause of death due to cardiovascular disease (5.87% of total deaths). , diabetes and kidney disease (1.84% of total deaths). Preventing obesity is key. Start by ensuring adequate sleep of at least 7 hours a day, BBTT (Good, Correct, Measurable, Regular) physical exercise, ensuring balanced nutrition, as well as understanding the limits of GGL consumption and smart ways to read packaging labels.

Pratiwi Yuniarti Martoyo, STP, MP Young Expert Pharmacy and Food Supervisor, Directorate of Processed Food Standardization, Indonesian POM Agency explained the importance of implementing the principles of Balanced Nutrition in everyday life to avoid Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). “The principle of balanced nutrition is a daily food composition that contains nutrients in types and quantities that suit the body’s needs, taking into account the principles of food diversity, physical activity, clean living behavior and monitoring body weight regularly in order to maintain a normal body weight to prevent nutritional problems. To ensure that the food we consume is nutritionally balanced, eat according to the principle of what’s on my plate and read nutrition labels to determine food choices that suit our nutritional needs. “Processed food nutrition labels that have been regulated by BPOM include Nutritional Value Information (ING), Front-of-Packed Nutrition Labeling, health messages and claims related to sugar, salt and fat.”

As stipulated by the Indonesian Ministry of Health, ideally people can consume no more than 50 grams of sugar (equivalent to 4 tablespoons) a day, no more than 5 grams of salt (equivalent to 1 teaspoon), and no more than 67 grams of fat (equivalent to 5 tablespoons). Eat). In an effort to find out the intake of sugar, salt and fat from packaged processed foods, the public is invited to be more careful in reading the nutritional labels on the packaging of processed foods consumed, by paying attention to the four nutritional value information on the packaging labels. Namely the number of servings per package, total energy per serving, nutrients (fat, saturated fat, protein, carbohydrates (including sugar)), and the RDA percentage (Nutritional Adequacy Rate) per serving.

In the framework of promotive and preventive efforts in dealing with Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), applying the Principles of Balanced Nutrition is very necessary in everyday life, make it a habit to read Nutritional Value Information before buying food or drink products that suit our nutritional needs. “Pay attention and limit daily consumption of sugar, salt and fat according to recommendations in health messages,” explained Pratiwi.

Putri MJ added, As a nutritionist and content creator, I really support this initiative. I believe that everyone can actually become an agent of change by understanding and starting a healthy lifestyle, then inviting and educating other people to join in through various creative and educational content by utilizing social media. To create credible health education content, make sure the information is accurate and based on scientific evidence, include clear references, a platform that is relevant to today’s society, use language that is easy to understand, and convey the message on target. Together, let’s prevent obesity and help people with obesity to live healthier lives.”

“We believe that everyone can have a positive impact by understanding better food and drink choices that are still delicious. To support this, Nutrifood provides healthier food choices that are sugar-free, low salt and low fat and various products that have received Healthier Choice labeling from BPOM. Apart from that, this year we will also continue the #LimitGGL campaign through various educational activities at our community center NutriHub, which is spread across 25 cities in Indonesia. “Let’s work together to create positive changes in the health of the Indonesian people,” concluded Susana.
