Paper Airplane Championship: Qualification in Regensburg – Regensburger Nachrichten

The world’s largest paper airplane championship is back. The paper airplane pilots will also compete in Regensburg in April at the Red Bull Paper Wings Qualiflyer – fold, get set, go!

Red Bull Paper Wings invites students and interested parties from all over the world to a global paper flying championship. The participants – around 52,000 in 2019 – have to let a simple sheet of paper fly through the air as far, as long or as artfully as possible. All national winners of the three categories – longest flight, longest flight time and aerobatics – will be invited to the world finals in Austria in Hangar-7, where the new world champions will be crowned.

Applications for Qualiflyer and Areobatics

As before, two of the competition categories will start with regional “qualifying flyers”, while the Aerobatics category will call for boarding on TikTok this season. The national and regional so-called Qualiflyers take place from March to April, with the application window for the Areobatics category being open until April 21st. On April 6th, paper airplane pilots will also compete in the Red Bull Paper Wings Qualiflyer in Regensburg.

The categories

The competition is divided into three categories: Longest flight and Longest flight duration will be judged on the qualifying flights, and the two pilots with the longest distance and longest flight time at each national final advance to the world finals. The third category is that of Aerobaticsin which the national finalists will be determined online for the first time on the social media platform TikTok.

Longest flight: To be successful, participants must be able to throw their planes further than everyone else. At the last world final in 2019, Jake Hardy from the USA led the field with 56.61 meters.

Longest flight duration: Competitors must fold their planes to have just the right aerodynamics to achieve the longest flight time. In 2019, Australian Cameron Clark took the win with 13.33 seconds.

Aerobatics: This category is about sensational aerobatic tricks – in the 2019 final, the Ukrainian Kateryna Ahafonova achieved the only perfect 10 with her creative paper airplane performance. However, the pilots do not have to compete in one of the qualifiers. Instead, they’re getting creative at home with their paper airplanes and sharing their skills on TikTok by using the hashtag #redbullpaperwings and tagging @redbull and their #country when submitting their posts. The entry with the most votes from a national jury – which takes into account the criteria of social commitment, flight performance and creativity of the performance and video – will make it to the World Finals.

The national final in the Technik Museum Sinsheim

The best pilots from the qualifying flyers and the TikTok submission will be invited to the national Red Bull Paper Wings final in the Red Bull World of Racing in the Technik Museum Sinsheim on April 28th. Here the national winners and thus the German representatives for the world finals in Salzburg are chosen. For the evaluation of the Aerobatics category, a jury of experienced pilots will be made up of hobby pilot and model Betty Taube, Red Bull Skydive Team athlete Max Manow and TikTok star, DIY inventor and builder of what is probably the world’s largest paper airplane Denis “BigBangBash” Hepbasli: be on site inside.
