[ラマッラー 26日 ロイター] – Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority Shtayeh announced his resignation on the 26th. The move is aimed at reaching a broad consensus among Palestinians on a political arrangement in response to the fighting between Israel and the Islamic group Hamas, which effectively controls the Palestinian autonomous region of Gaza.

The US government is increasing pressure on Abbas, chairman of the autonomous government, to reform the autonomous government and create a political system capable of governing post-war Gaza.

Abbas accepted Shtayeh’s resignation and asked him to remain interim prime minister until a permanent successor is chosen.

Mr. Steyer told ministers that the next step requires “new administrative and political arrangements that take into account the current situation in war-torn Gaza.” He also said the authority of the autonomous government needed to be extended to all of Palestine.

Chairman Abbas is expected to nominate Mohammad Mustafa, a former World Bank official and chairman of the Palestine Investment Fund (PIF), to replace Shtei. He has experience in rebuilding Gaza after the Israeli army invaded Gaza in 2014.

The Palestinian Authority currently controls parts of the West Bank, but the Gaza Strip has been under effective control of Hamas since 2007.

The main autonomous government, Fatah and Hamas, are working to reach an agreement on a national unity government and are scheduled to hold talks in Moscow on the 28th.

Hamas officials say they need to reach a broad consensus on governing Palestine.
