Overcoming Silence: One Woman’s Fight Against Domestic Violence and the Flaws in the Justice System

Again a case of aggression, this time from Burgas. 30-year-old Nia Yordanova mustered up the courage to stand in front of the bTV camera to tell her story.

Her case was a year and a half ago, when the partner she lives with beat her up in a fight. The medical examiner described the injuries as “minor bodily injury.”

They suspected “moderate bodily injury” because I had swelling on my face and nose that lasted for maybe a month. The mental pain is absolutely more, it is very difficult to experience, it is very difficult to talk about it, says Nia.

Police and a local association are helping the girl file a complaint.

“I reached the association, which gave me full support, I spoke with psychologists, with legally responsible persons, who made the complaint to the prosecutor’s office,” adds the young woman.

Nia’s case ends without charges against the abuser. The court’s reasoning was that there was insufficient evidence of domestic violence.

It all comes down to the justice system at the end of the day, and if it’s not able to help us and disarm us, like it happened to me, there’s no one else to help us and there’s no way for women to tell their stories because they know they don’t have a back , says Nia Yordanova.

The young woman is pushing for changes to the Criminal Code and advises victims of domestic violence who are still afraid to seek help: “Don’t be afraid to speak up, because if you stay silent, it will continue.”
