After “Grégory”, the Netflix platform is interested in one of the most sordid and publicized affairs in France in “Outreau: a French nightmare”.
It is such a sordid affair that it is difficult to listen to all its many details. A case which lasted many years and which shook France during a long trial marked by a judicial error.
With Outreau: a French nightmare, the creators of the documentary series Grégory this time dive into this horrific story which led 17 adults to court for sexual violence against children. Thirteen of them, victims of false accusations, were ultimately acquitted.
Children in danger
It all started in December 2000 when numerous reports from social services indicated strange behavior and suspicions of sexual abuse against the children of the Delay couple – Thierry Delay and Myriam Delay Badaoui. When the children are removed and a legal investigation begins, the family’s sordid daily life is revealed. Psychological and physical violence, sexual abuse, rape… The testimony of the three children is overwhelming.
Very quickly, the couple made their confessions and Myriam Delay Badaoui accused other adults of similar acts, thus insinuating the existence of a pedophile network on an unprecedented scale in the Hauts-de-France region. Several names are named, other children join the list of victims and it is one of the most important French legal cases which is gradually becoming established in the daily lives of the French.
Innocents accused
This new documentary series offered by Netflix takes a detailed look at the many twists and turns and flaws of this affair. The viewing is trying, if not unbearable, especially during the first episode, when the work focuses on the horror suffered by the children.
Behind this sensationalist side – the documentary nevertheless tries to avoid this pitfall as much as possible – this work is interesting for understanding the functioning of the media and the mechanism of a judicial error which, based on false testimonies, destroys the lives of 13 accused dragged through the mud.
