Day One or Day One is a special day on Amazon. Sebastian Sprigade experienced him as the site manager of the new distribution center in the Simmering district of Vienna. He and his team spent months preparing the launch until the first order was placed on the night of February 17, 2021. “In order to be able to supply the customers directly from Vienna-Simmering, a lot of preparation was necessary. Ultimately, a lot of people contributed to the fact that we could start as planned: from the construction team who looked after the construction site to our colleagues from technology, IT and the actual launch and planning team, ”says Sebastian.
Several postcode areas in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland are supplied from the new distribution center. The parcels arrive from Amazon’s European logistics and distribution centers, are unloaded, sorted onto the delivery vehicles, in order to finally be delivered to Austrian customers. Protective measures against Covid-19 have long been routine in new locations such as Vienna-Simmering: work processes take into account safety distances of 2 meters, masks, gloves and disinfectants are available for drivers and employees.
Site manager Sebastian knows the processes; he has been with Amazon for more than four months. After working in Germany and Australia, Vienna has long been his adopted home: “For me, it’s the most beautiful city in the world.” At Amazon in Liesing, he got to know all the processes in the distribution center: “This is standard: all managers learn from Amazon the pieke handles the tasks, from sorting to loading. ”Sebastian thinks that this is a good rule:“ Amazon has flat hierarchies. We all see ourselves as a team that achieves the goals together. It is therefore good that everyone knows the processes and appreciates the work of colleagues. “

Around 200 people work in the distribution center in Simmering. Andre is one of them. As a “Shift Manager” he is responsible for ensuring that his shift runs smoothly. “You have a lot to do with your colleagues. This is important in order to quickly see if there is a problem and someone needs help, ”says Andre. Six years ago he moved from Carinthia to the federal capital Vienna, and has been with Amazon for a little over three months. “The mood among us is great. We were all pretty excited about the start of the distribution center, of course, and whether everything would work well. The most impressive thing here for me is how quickly and efficiently solutions are found for a wide variety of tasks. Every opinion counts, you can address everything freely. “
When Andre’s colleagues have unloaded the incoming Amazon parcels in the distribution center, sorted them according to delivery districts and completed the route planning, the orders are loaded into the delivery vehicles. In Vienna-Simmering, Amazon works with nine regional and local delivery partners. Around 400 drivers are on duty to ensure that the orders reach the customers on time. Agota is at the delivery partner company BSS Logistik employed. The delivery tours for the drivers start every day between 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Agota usually starts her work at 9:00 am and says: “I like my job, working independently, the variety and the customer contact. The best thing is always to be experienced when a customer is happy about the delivery. “
Agota’s first tour of the new distribution center went well. Site manager Sebastian is also satisfied with the start: “The preparations have paid off. Everyone in the team is happy that the processes worked well. ”
