Oslo: man stole truck – went on a wild ride

Police moved with several patrols to Sandaker in Oslo after a man stole a truck and crashed into several cars and house walls.

Police received a series of emergency calls, the first at 10.06pm on Thursday evening.

The thief is said to have jumped into the truck, with the owner present, and fled.

Crashed in the playground

The truck was stolen outside Rema 1000.

– It was a pretty dramatic way to steal. The tailgate was open and he was driving at high speed as things fell, says police operations director Gjermund Stokkli.

Among the goods that have fallen to the ground must be the containers with the clothes and the load limb itself.

During the journey, the truck must have crashed both on the road and on the sidewalk in Sandakerveien. The whole thing must have ended in a crash inside an apartment building in Amtmann Meinichs gate. There he got stuck in a playground fence.

A man in his thirties was arrested there. Police believe he appears to be drunk.

No one was physically injured. Law enforcement agencies have also found no damage to the cars so far, as reported in the numerous emergency calls.

So far, material damage to the walls of the house in the apartment building and to the fence of the playground where the truck stopped has been confirmed.

Crews are at the scene and are cutting the fence to free the car.

– It’s just lucky that there were no injuries in this one, says foreman Emil Ødegård at the scene.

Dangerous situation

– We went up the route to look for the wounded. None have been found, but there is some material damage, Stokkli says.

There is no indication that the man attempted to harm people on purpose. The wild driving was likely in an attempt to get away from the owner, police believe.

– Was there a danger to people?

– As we interpret the emergency calls and what they told us, we clearly see that there has been a great deal of potential for damage, says Stokkli.

Police have several video recordings of the crash and will be questioning witnesses. The truck driver is already known to the police.
