Los Angeles – There are still many unanswered questions about the planned Oscar gala in 2021 due to the corona pandemic. But now at least the production team for the show has been determined. The next trophy spectacle is to be hosted by three successful producers, including Oscar winner Steven Soderbergh. As the Oscar Academy announced on Tuesday in Los Angeles, Soderbergh, Stacey Sher and Jesse Collins will produce the awards ceremony, which is planned for the end of April.
This “dream team” will react to the current situation, said Academy President David Rubin and Managing Director Dawn Hudson in a joint statement with a view to the corona pandemic. New approaches and concepts are required.
The trio explained that they were both enthusiastic and respectful of this task. They wanted to create a show that “really feels like the movies we all love”.
Many questions unanswered
Soderbergh (57) won the 2001 Oscar for best director for “Traffic – Power of the Cartel”. He shot hits like “Erin Brockovich”, “Contagion” and the “Ocean’s” series. The two-time Oscar-nominated Sher has been on board as a producer for films such as “Django Unchained”, “Pulp Fiction” and “Erin Brockovich”. Collins has produced several awards shows, including the Grammy Awards. All three are working on the prestigious show for the first time.
The 93rd Oscar Gala is slated to take place in Hollywood on April 25th next year. Because of the Corona crisis, the show was postponed from February to the later date. The trophy ceremony should go live in the traditional Dolby Theater, it said in June. However, the new Oscar timetable leaves many questions about the format unanswered. Industry insiders fear that the ongoing pandemic could lead to cancellation or a virtual show.
