Yuki Shimizu (13 years old at the time), a first year junior high school student in Toyonaka City, Osaka, had been attending Alps no Mori, an after-school day care facility in Suita City, since his first year of elementary school.

It is said that he was spending time after classes at the special needs school before returning home.

According to his mother, Akari (42), Yusei was diagnosed with “autism spectrum disorder” when he was three years old, and it was difficult for him to communicate verbally.

The parents played together and exchanged handmade cards with pictures or pictures on them.

Before commuting to the facility, the parents had made certain arrangements with the facility as part of an “individual support plan”.

Due to the nature of his disability, Mr. Yusei sometimes started running suddenly, so two staff members must accompany him when he gets off the shuttle vehicle and guide him into the facility.

However, on December 9th of last year, Yuu suddenly started running after getting out of the courtesy car and went missing.

In response to this accident, Suita City conducted an audit of the facility in February this year.

Administrative action was taken to suspend the acceptance of new users for three months for failing to ensure the safety of students by not taking the prescribed measures.

One year after the accident, Akari still frequently visits the river where the accident took place and lays out flowers.

Every time I see the river, I am reminded of Yusei, who loved playing in the water.

Akari said, “I think I looked at the sparkling water surface and decided to go out and have some fun.Every time I came here, I wanted to help that child, or that she must have been in pain, and so on. It makes me sad. I want society as a whole to create an opportunity to think about the causes and what needs to be improved to prevent accidents like this from happening again.”

Regarding this accident, the facility said in an interview in October, “Our feeling of being very sorry for the bereaved family will not change no matter how much time passes.We must be careful to prevent a similar accident from happening again.” We will pay the full amount and work to prevent it from happening again.”
