Jakarta, CNNI Indonesia

Cho Gue Sung is one of the new faces of the South Korean national team who has suddenly become a star World Cup 2022.

Gue Sung is still 24 years old and is a minority in the South Korean national team that contains senior players.

However, the striker of the Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors club managed to repay the trust of coach Paulo Bento. Gue Sung scored two of South Korea’s four goals at the 2022 World Cup.

Gue Sung’s bright light on the field then earned him the attention of netizens. Quoted from The AthleticGue Sung had to turn off his phone to focus on the World Cup.

“He needs to rest. His phone keeps ringing. This keeps him awake. He tries to concentrate on football, while messages arrive from time to time,” said South Korean journalist Seo Jung Hwan who explained Gue Sung’s situation.

Various notifications have arrived on Gue Sung’s cell phone, from likes on Instagram to invitations to get married.

Gue Sung’s performance made him a celebrity. At the start of the World Cup, his followers numbered only 20,000. Now the number of followers has increased dramatically to almost 2 million.

Not only from Instagram, Gue Sung has also received popularity on Twitter. An invitation to build a house also appeared from a fan.

“When I first saw your Instagram there were only 40,000 followers, now it’s a million in just a few days. Cho Gue Sung, what a strong man! Thank you for the two beautiful goals and making history today, King. Now please accept my hand in marriage,” one fan tweeted.

The hashtag #choguesung suddenly popped up like a mushroom on TikTok. There is also a short video capturing the moment Gue Sung sits down on the bench, which has been viewed more than seven million times.

Along with the growing popularity, Gue Sung has also been associated with European clubs such as Borussia Dortmund, Celtic and Fenerbahce.

Recently, Gue Sung’s name is also on the rise because Cristiano Ronaldo scolded him in the South Korea-Portugal match.

Ronaldo showed a silent gesture to Gue Sung who asked him to leave the field immediately when the substitution board shown by the assistant referee indicated that Portugal’s number 7 should come off in the 65th minute.

“Before being replaced, one of their players told me to leave as soon as possible. I told him to shut up, he had no authority. He didn’t need to say anything,” Ronaldo said quoted by the Mirror.

“I’ll speed up the pace if the referee says so. He doesn’t have to. There’s no controversy, it happened in the heat of the match,” said the Selcao das Quinas captain.
