Only 1 in 10 Flemish employees never work overtime | inland

Almost half of Flemings work overtime every week, for 10% it is also the daily rate. This is the conclusion of a survey of 1,000 employees. Remarkable: for one in five employees, the manager has no idea how many overtime hours are worked.

Still responding to late night work emails? Or busy on the weekend to complete a task? You are not alone. For almost half of Flemish employees (46%) the working week lasts on average about 4 hours longer than the 38 or 40 hours foreseen. Only 9% should never work overtime. This results from an iVox study commissioned by Protime, the market leader in, among other things, time recording and work planning.

Those who work from home for at least half of the week are more likely to work overtime (50%) than those who are in the office every day (39%). “Many employees see commuting time as working time,” says Lode Godderis, professor of occupational medicine at KU Leuven. “We also see that many employees get a little more flexibility in their working day at home, for example to pick up their children from school. They try to (excessively) compensate for this by working longer in the evening. Finally, we also see that working from home blurs the line between work and private life, making it more difficult to end the working day at home ”.

For those who do occasional extra work hours, barely half of executives (52%) know how many hours are involved. For more than a quarter of the interviewees (26%) the manager knows that overtime is often done, but not when or for how long. For another 22%, the supervisor has absolutely no idea.
